Prepositions

Certain verbs and adjectives are often followed by prepositions. Unfortunately, there are no grammatical rules to explain which prepositions follow which verbs and adjectives. It is important to learn and memorize these collocations or combinations.

This lesson will focus on three specific combinations.*

  1. 1
    verb + WITH

Examples: agree, disagree, work, team, argue, meet, interfere, compete, compare, begin, start, help
  2. 2
    adjective + FOR

Examples: responsible, famous, happy, prepared, eligible, sorry, respected, ready, thankful
  3. 3
    adjective + IN

Examples: disappointed, experienced, skilled, interested, involved, successful, slow, inexperienced

*remember these structures are followed by either a noun or gerund (verb + ING)
